Soup & Bread
Who says giving should end when the holidays do? Come to Soup & Bread!
Soup & Bread is a low-key, family-friendly community meal held on winter Wednesdays from 5:30-8 pm at the Hideout. Join them through March for hot soup, fresh bread, and good people. Each week they round up a handful of chefs, caterers, musicians, writers, artists, and home cooks to donate pots of soup, which are served to all comers along with fresh bread donated by Publican Quality Bread. Your pay-what-you-can donations go to a different Chicago food pantry or hunger relief organization. It is designed to be an easy, low-key way to get folks out of the house and socializing in the dead of a dark Chicago winter. At times these past few years, it’s seemed the entire city could use a nice hot bowl of soup.
They've been around for 10 years now and have staged Soup & Bread dinners from Brooklyn to Seattle, and seen spin-offs pop up as close to home as Ottawa, Illinois, and as far afield as Oslo, Norway. They’ve published two cookbooks, met hundreds of talented, generous cooks, and tasted innumerable recipes. Over these past ten years, they've raised over $80,000 to help alleviate hunger here in Chicago and around the country.
If you're interested in cooking some soup for one of the weeks, get in touch asap at soupnbread10@gmail.com. They run every Wednesday from January 3 to March 28 at the Hideout, 1534 W. Wabansia in Chicago. To learn more about Soup & Bread, visit their website here. Hope to see you all there tonight!
